Activities

Women’s Spirituality Group:
We meet to share our lives and support one another through prayer.  We offer a brief meditation as a way to center ourselves in the midst of our busy lives.  We discuss a book regarding spirituality and how we can apply it to our lives. We look forward to you joining our group.

Angel Group
Come to learn about the angels in your life.

Men's Fellowship Group
We meet Thursdays to share our lives and give support to each other.

Volunteer Opportunities:
We currently volunteer at the Lansing City Rescue Mission in a variety of programs that they offer.  We help at their Women’s Shelter frequently by serving meals and providing childcare.  We help with the “Backpack Give-Away,” “Winter Coat Give-Away,” and with their fundraising efforts at Lugnuts Ballpark.

Almont New Church Assembly and Retreat Center:
Almont New Church and Assembly and Retreat Center, known as Almont, is a rustic camp setting in the farmland north of Detroit.  We meet here throughout the year at annual events such as Flowerfest, Christmasfest, and summer camp.

  • Flowerfest-- Volunteers landscape and plant flowers around
the retreat center.  This is a chance to provide service to the
community while visiting with old and new friends.
  • Christmasfest-- A gathering of church friends from all over
Michigan reunite for this special day.  Children participate in
arts-n-crafts and a visit from Santa Claus.  We dine together
and end the day with candlelight worship.
  • Summer Camp-- This opportunity offers morning and
evening worship services; morning lecture and discussion
  for adults and teens; classes for pre-school to high-school;
supervised recreation, crafts and swimming; all-camp activities
each evening (hike, campfire, skits, music and games).

Bowling:

The church year begins with the congregation meeting at a local bowling alley for a couple of games
after the first worship service of the year (autumn). We bowl to enjoy fellowship, fun and good humor
as we begin the church year together.

Church Picnic:
In mid-June after the last worship service of the church year, the congregation enjoys a
picnic in the home of one of the congregants.  This is a way to celebrate the life of the
church through good food and good company.

9/11 Memorial Communion Service:
We gather on 9/11 for our annual memorial communion service.  A Swedenborgian, Alicia Titus, lost her life as she was a flight attendant on United Airlines 175.  Rev. Tafel and others from the congregation grew up attending church activities with her.  In loving memory, her parents began the “Alicia Titus Memorial Peace Fund” at Urbana University.  We dedicate a special collection in her honor and donate it to this charity in her memory.

Michigan Association
The Lansing Swedenborgian Church is a member of the Michigan Association of the
Swedenborgian Church of North America. We are governed by our Constitution and
By-Laws as well as by the Association.  It is through Michigan Association that we
are a member of our larger denomination: The Swedenborgian Church of
North America.

The purpose of the Michigan Association is to support the ministry of the Church of
the Holy City in Royal Oak, Almont New Church Assembly and Retreat Center, the
Lansing Swedenborgian Church and Members at Large.  Membership is open to all
adult persons (18 years and older) residing in Michigan who are confirmed into the General Convention of the New Jerusalem (Swedenborgian Church).  Meetings are held annually.

Swedenborgian Church of North America
The Swedenborgian Church exists to be open to the Lord’s presence and leading, especially by fostering personal and ordained ministries.  The church facilitates the spiritual well-being of people who have in common the spirit of the Lord in bringing in the descent of the Holy City, New Jerusalem.

Each summer the national church holds its annual Convention hosted by one of the associations within the denomination. This is an opportunity to meet people who participate in the denomination, friends from other congregations, as well as a chance to see a different part of the country or even an area of Canada that you haven’t seen before.  The purpose of this event is to conduct the business of the church, ordain new ministers and worship together in new and meaningful ways.
